Whether you are relocating from Dubai or sending a piece to a buyer abroad, most damage to artwork happens in transit — and almost all of it is preventable.
Before packing
- Photograph each piece front and back and note its size.
- Remove hanging wire tension points that could scratch the frame.
- Tape an X across large glazed pieces with low-tack tape so glass stays in place if it cracks (not needed for acrylic).
Layers of protection
- Surface wrap: acid-free tissue or glassine against paintings; never bubble wrap directly on a painted surface.
- Corner protectors: corners take the impacts.
- Rigid protection: board or foam on both faces.
- Outer wrap or box: sealed against dust and moisture.
When to crate
Valuable, fragile, oversized or international shipments should travel in a custom crate built around the piece, lined with foam so it cannot move.
In transit
Keep artwork upright, never flat under other items, and away from heat and moisture. Unpack in the room where it will hang and let it acclimatise before hanging.
