Large framed art and mirrors are heavy, and a single nail is not a hanging system. This is how a professional install is approached.
1. Know the wall
Concrete, blockwork and drywall need different fixings. Drywall in particular needs fixings designed for hollow walls — or, for heavy pieces, fixing into the framing behind it.
2. Rate the hardware generously
Fixings, hooks and wire or D-rings should all be rated comfortably above the piece's weight. The weakest component sets the limit.
3. Use two points or a cleat
Two fixing points — or a French cleat for very large works — spread the load and keep the frame level, even after cleaning.
4. Hang at the right height
A common approach is to centre artwork at roughly eye level, adjusting for furniture below and ceiling height. Keeping one centre line across a room or corridor makes a scheme feel intentional.
5. Security in public spaces
Hotels, offices and retail spaces use security hanging systems that lock frames to the wall, deterring removal and keeping pieces straight.
6. Protect the piece in transit
Large works should arrive wrapped and corner-protected and be unpacked in the room where they will hang.
