Glazing is the part of a frame most people think about last, yet it does more to protect — or spoil — an artwork than almost anything else. In a city with Dubai's light, the choice matters more than usual.
The four options
Standard (clear) glass
Inexpensive and clear, but it reflects roughly as much as a window and offers little protection from ultraviolet light. It is fine for posters, inexpensive prints and pieces that will hang away from sunlight.
UV-filtering glass
Looks like standard glass but blocks most of the ultraviolet light that fades inks, pigments and paper. It still reflects, so it suits work that needs protection but hangs where glare is not a problem.
Museum glass
Museum-grade glass pairs UV filtering with an anti-reflective coating, so the glass almost disappears. It is the choice for original works, signed pieces, photographs and anything hung opposite a window or under strong lighting. It costs more, and it is the upgrade clients most often say they are glad they made.
Acrylic
Lighter than glass and shatter-resistant, acrylic is the practical choice for large pieces, children's rooms, hotels and public spaces. UV-filtering and anti-reflective acrylics are available where protection and clarity are needed without the weight.
How to decide
- Is the work original, valuable or irreplaceable? Choose UV protection as a minimum; museum glass if it will be seen in strong light.
- Where will it hang? Opposite windows or under spotlights, anti-reflective glazing makes the biggest visible difference.
- How big is it? Large frames become heavy quickly; acrylic reduces weight and risk.
- Who uses the space? Hotels, offices, corridors and family rooms favour shatter-resistant acrylic.
Why it matters in Dubai
Bright, year-round daylight and large glazed facades mean artwork is often exposed to more light than in many other cities. UV-filtering glazing slows fading; anti-reflective coatings make work readable in bright rooms. Glazing is not a substitute for sensible placement — keep valuable work out of direct sun — but it is the most effective protection a frame can offer.
