Limited edition prints let artists reach more collectors without selling the original. Done well, they carry real value; done carelessly, they undermine it.
1. Capture the original properly
High-resolution digitising of the artwork is the foundation. Every print will only be as good as the capture.
2. Proof against the original
Print a proof and compare it side by side with the original under good light. Adjust until colour and tone match, then lock the file.
3. Choose the paper
Textured cotton rag papers suit paintings and drawings; smoother papers suit detailed and photographic work. Archival papers from makers such as Hahnemühle and Canson Infinity give longevity collectors expect.
4. Fix the edition
Decide the edition size and sizes before selling, and never exceed them. Artist's proofs are usually a small, separate set.
5. Sign, number and certify
Sign and number each print (for example 12/50) in pencil, and provide a certificate of authenticity with the title, edition number, paper, date and signature.
6. Offer consistent framing
Offering the edition framed to one specification adds value and makes it easier for collectors to buy.
